Walking With Dogs
Dandenong Ranges Trail Knowledge Base
Where can you take your dog on the DRT?
Many people ask us whether dogs can be taken on the tracks that make up the Dandenong Ranges Trail. So here is the full answer.
Apart from the sections that pass through the Dandenong Ranges National Park you are welcome to walk with your dog along most of the Trail.
If you are walking the whole trail and looking to overnight in accommodation along the way you will have to contact individual operators to find out if they are pet friendly.
Section 1: Gembrook to Emerald
All of this section can be done with a dog.
Section 2: Emerald to Monbulk
All of this section can be done with a dog.
Section 3: Monbulk to Belgrave
You can only walk as far as Kallista as it is National Park after here. See next section for our suggestions for continuing on the Trail.
Section 4: Belgrave to Olinda
It is not possible to walk from Belgrave through Sherbrook Forest to the Alfred Nicholas Memorial Gardens.
From the Alfred Nicholas Memorial Gardens to Sassafras you are ok to go with your dog.
Our suggestion is to walk Section 3 as far as the roundabout in Kallista and then walk 1.6km along Sherbrook Rd to get to the entrance of the Alfred Nicholas Gardens. Follow the Trail from here to Sassafras,.
From Sassafras you will have to walk 2.3km along Mt Dandenong Tourist Rd and Olinda Cres rather than take the Trail which passes through the National Park.
Section 5: Olinda to William Ricketts Sanctuary
It is not possible to do this section with a dog.
We suggest walking the 3km along Mt Dandenong Tourist Rd which brings you to the entrance of the Sanctuary and the end of the section.
Dog are not allowed in the Sanctuary.
Section 6: William Ricketts Sanctuary to Mt Evelyn
All of this section can be done with a dog.
Please keep your dog on a lead through the Rifle Range Gully Track section. We have seen lyrebirds here and a dog off its lead can cause all sorts of problems for the lyrebirds.
Section 7: Mt Evelyn to Lilydale
All of this section can be done with a dog.
